Job Summary

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller oversees accounting operations and internal controls for a hybrid organization with over 50 staff including for-profit and not-for-profit entities, real estate, and a New Markets Tax Credit program. As a senior member of Ecotrust, the Controller is responsible for advancing racial justice and equity at Ecotrust, using an equity lens to guide the design and modification of accounting processes and systems. Supervising a team of four finance and accounting staff, the Controller sets the tone for team culture, fostering a positive, effective, supportive, empathetic, and communicative team environment. The Controller leads all day-to-day finance operations of a budget of $12 million including functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grant and project financial management. The Controller ensures that Ecotrust has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct well-coordinated audits with clean opinions. The Controller also works closely with program leaders and their staff, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures, but also to explore how the finance function can support program operations.


This is a full-time position based in Portland, Oregon. Ecotrust is open to the person selected for this position being located elsewhere in the region (Oregon, Alaska, Washington, California), with the ability to visit the Portland office on a regular basis.

You are a mature and humble leader with 8+ years of accounting and finance experience, ideally beginning in accounting and audit, followed by experience gathering, evaluating, presenting and reporting financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders. You are a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker committed to continuous improvement, who will own, in partnership with the CFO, the responsibility for finance at Ecotrust. You bring energy, enthusiasm, and creative problem-solving skills along with expert knowledge and understanding of accounting systems and a commitment to transparency. You have a demonstrable track record recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining a diverse and highly effective team; with the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly.



Finance and Accounting Leadership

  • Oversee the design and maintenance of systems that accurately record the financial activity of Ecotrust and its subsidiaries, allowing reporting of results on a timely basis to management, the board, and key stakeholders
  • Plan and monitor the monthly financial close process for the department. Assure that financial activity is accurately reported in the general ledger. Prepare monthly account reconciliations for balance sheet accounts and review reconciliations prepared by staff members.
  • Monitor and manage cash flow, provide recommendations on investment of excess in accordance with anticipated future needs, and ensure that sufficient cash is available to pay bills.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders to ensure all inbound contributions are properly classified as unrestricted, temporarily restricted, or permanently restricted or requires additional internal deliberation to clarify any donor or internal designations. Review all revenue for appropriate classification for audit, US GAAP, and 990 purposes.
  • Ensure that all eliminations for inter-company transactions are appropriately recorded in the general ledger and that the associated intercompany receivables/payables are in balance. For entities not 100% owned by Ecotrust, ensure that investor member interest is accurately reflected in the financial statements.
  • Oversee the preparation of the monthly financial statement package, including analysis, for management to use in making decisions.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual revenue and expense budgets and outyear forecasts for the organization.
  • Manage cash accounts, including bank reconciliations, deposit entry, and reconciliation. Serve as primary contact with bank officials with regards to account maintenance.
  • Use an equity lens, creative problem-solving, and analytical skills to create options and resolutions to various financial and accounting challenges.
  • With NMTC Asset and Compliance Manager ensure accurate investment fund and managing member distributions.


Audit, Tax, and Compliance

  • In coordination with the CFO, report to the board on financial matters, the annual audit, taxes, and financial risks.
  • Coordinate relationships with external auditors and collaborate with auditors and finance staff to plan the audit(s) and ensure appropriate preparation for the audit(s) and the A-133 audit.
  • Coordinate relationships with external tax preparers and with staff across the organization (Development team, Board liaison, etc.) to ensure appropriate preparation for the Form 990, Form 990-T, CA 199, CA 109, CA RRF-1, OR CT-12, OR-20, Multnomah County/Portland Form C.
  • Oversee preparation of the annual consolidated financial statements including footnotes in accordance with US GAAP.
  • Design and maintain internal control procedures and policies to reduce risk and optimize use of resources, while ensuring legal compliance and oversight.
  • Oversee preparation of the organization’s annual Negotiated Indirect Cost Rate proposal.
  • Ensure that proper policies and procedures are being followed by the Finance Team and are documented and up to date.
  • Assist other teams or departments as necessary related to general accounting guidance and internal controls and assist when needed on special requests/projects.


Supervision, Collaboration, Equity

  • Support recruitment and retention of diverse, well-qualified accounting staff in collaboration with CFO.
  • Supervise a team of four finance and accounting staff (Senior Accountant, Financial Analyst, NMTC Compliance Manager, and Staff Accountant), providing direction, development coaching, input, and feedback; Implement performance management process for staff.
  • Leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities, and develop and implement training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
  • Contribute to a spirit of trust, accountability, and high team morale.
  • Provide leadership to strengthen internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
  • Engage in and provide team leadership for organization-wide Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) initiative, and strive for racially equitable outcomes; take responsibility for creating and maintaining a safe and welcoming community by making room for people of color, trans and gender-non-conforming folks, and other populations who routinely encounter systemic oppressions.

  • At least eight years of broad accounting and finance experience, in a wide range of industries and sectors
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a deep commitment to transparency and collaboration; experience effectively communicating key financial information, including presentations to senior management, board, or other external stakeholders.
  • A track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants
  • Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers
  • Strong emotional intelligence and effective listening skills, as well as the ability to honestly and compassionately deliver different types of feedback
  • Demonstrated integrity, credibility, and ability to collaborate and communicate with stakeholders in a humble, transparent, and empathetic way
  • At least three years of experience supervising staff; Demonstrated track record supervising a diverse and highly effective team, leading with empathy and collaboration
  • Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software implementation and managing relationships with software vendors; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software
  • Demonstrated experience working with accounting and ERP systems (Microsoft Dynamics,Sage Intacct, and Workday Adaptive Insights preferred) in not only data entry, but also implementation, customization, integration with other systems, and complex report writing
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a group
  • Strong attention to detail, the ability to multitask, and to handle high pressure situations
  • Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Excel, database applications, and similar systems for complex accounting and data management processes


Preferred, but not required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance/Accounting
  • CPA/MBA a plus
  • Experience with New Market Tax Credit transactions.
